Piergiorgio Paterlini – “Robinson, Repubblica”

The Prodigy

One night, a strange face appears in the sky over a big Italian city. It looks rough and childlike, as if a kid had drawn it. When people wake up and see it, they are shocked. Among them is Luca, a young priest who ends up telling the story. Don Luca is not an ordinary priest, he’s famous. He writes bestselling books, appears on TV, and his university lectures are always full. But he’s also secretly in love with Marta, a troubled and mysterious young woman. At first, people find the Face amusing and interesting. Photos of it go viral on social media. But as the days pass and the Face doesn’t go away, confusion and fear begin to grow. What is it? A weather event? An art piece? A message? Or a sign of something dangerous? A coded message, or the warning of an imminent chemical war? The idea that spreads most is that it’s a miracle, a sign from God. Soon, people start reporting healings and strange events. Luca doesn’t know what to tell his churchgoers, who are desperate for answers and want the Church to say something. The mayor is also overwhelmed. Crowds of pilgrims and tourists flood the city. Camps pop up everywhere. It’s chaos. New religious groups and leaders begin to appear. The most powerful is a young, charismatic transgender ascetic who calls for a new kind of spiritual revolution. Swept up in this wave of fanaticism and haunted by Marta’s sudden disappearance, Caught in the middle of all this, and deeply shaken by Marta’s sudden disappearance, Luca starts to question everything—even his faith. But in his confusion, he also begins to discover a raw, deeper way to connect with the mystery of life.

Already considered one of the most important voices in Italian theater, in his literary debut Sinisi delivers a daring, contemporary parable that draws on the great European literary tradition — Houellebecq, Saramago, Rushdie — blending it with Italian political news and elements of philosophical and supernatural fiction. The result is a powerful and entirely original novel that defies categorization and challenges us with some of the fundamental questions of our time: What does it mean to believe? Why does humanity continue to hope in something as invisible and incomprehensible as God, as salvation?
