Odiocrazia. Distruggere e ricostruire il web che crea uomini violenti, donne succubi e tiranni idioti
by Fonte, Valeria
You think you live in a democracy? You’re wrong.
This is the era of a new form of government, subtle and petty, dominating our lives both on and off the screen: hatecracy. A perfect machine fueled by Big Tech profits, political polarization, and the most ancient and deeply rooted of sentiments: misogyny. The internet has given rise to a new pyramid of gender violence, dangerous and frightening. Men are being pushed into a cult of control by the new gurus of masculinity. Women end up in a meat grinder of insults, harassment, and abuse, which wants them to be subservient, possibly silent, but above all beautiful, under penalty of media pillorying. And the new tyrants have fun, as if the web were their personal playground, steering hatred with algorithms and transforming social networks into the greatest propaganda tool ever. It’s World War III, even if we’ve never called it that.
Valeria Fonte writes a militant, lucid, and merciless essay that dissects the dynamics of digital gender violence to provide us with the theoretical and, above all, practical tools of resistance. From the traps of the manosphere to the myth of the pick-me-girl, from free hating to technofeudalism, Odiocrazia is not only an analysis of contemporary social collapse, but also an action manual that teaches us how to start speaking in front of a camera, to make ourselves heard and occupy space. It is an urgent invitation to stop submitting to the internet and start stealing it from its new masters, to return to doing the one thing that has always been denied us: existing without asking permission.
