Carnival 1865, Monsignor Calandrelli, professor of astronomy, is found emasculated in the alcove where he spent time with his lover. Spring 1865, Fr Anacleto Murri, parish priest of Santa Maria dell’Orto, was found dead in the sacristy of the church. Spring 1865, father Giuseppe Ruco, teacher at the Nazarene college, is found in a dry well on the outskirts of Rome with a millstone around his neck. The chain of murders continues, but Cardinal Ferrero, despite his efforts, cannot discover the hand that hides behind these murders until on the night of the feast of Saints Peter and Paul he himself becomes the victim of a ferocious murderer.
