Puoi ancora amare sapendo che sei sostituibile per chi ti sta accanto? La storia di un’ossessione che ci sfiora, o ci ha sfiorati, tutti. Un romanzo d’esordio che spiazza, manda in crisi, commuove. Tra pochi giorni lui avrebbe sposato la ragazza con gli occhi grandi, se non fosse morto in un incidente stradale. E adesso la vede tornare in quella che era la loro casa, trovare il suo computer sul tavolo e le ciabatte che lei gli aveva regalato in corridoio, dove lui le ha lasciate. La tazza invece è sul bordo del lavandino: lei ci infila il naso dentro e scoppia a piangere. Non vuole mangiare, anche se la madre insiste, ha perso la fame. Poi però, distrattamente, beve un sorso di caffè, morde un biscotto, e si stupisce di trovarlo buonissimo, come prima che lui morisse, come sempre. Forse è in quel momento che inizia il suo faticoso ritorno alla vita, ed è la voce di lui a raccontarlo. Giorno dopo giorno, vede scorrere l’esistenza di lei – che cambia città, si sposa, ha figli – catturando le istantanee di un tempo che non gli appartiene; le alterna ai ricordi di un amore che credeva unico. Ma se avesse l’occasione di vivere ancora, come reagirebbe alla certezza che del suo grande amore, nel giro di un attimo, potrebbe non restare niente? Con leggerezza e disincanto, Emanuele Aldrovandi si interroga sulla natura delle relazioni, mettendo in scena il desiderio indicibile che il mondo finisca con noi. «Se l’universo restasse fermo, anche solo per un secondo, la gravità lo farebbe collassare su sé stesso. Per questo motivo, nonostante io sia appena morto, i pianeti continuano a roteare intorno alle proprie stelle, le galassie procedono nel loro costante allontanamento le une dalle altre e tu giri la chiave nella porta di quella che fino a qualche ora fa era casa nostra».
Emanuele Aldrovandi (Reggio Emilia, 1985) è uno degli autori teatrali più rappresentati degli ultimi anni in Italia; le sue opere sono state tradotte e messe in scena in inglese, tedesco, francese, spagnolo, polacco, sloveno, ceco, rumeno, catalano e arabo. Per il cinema ha scritto e diretto vari cortometraggi, tra cui Bataclan, vincitore del Nastro d’argento nel 2021. Questo è il suo primo romanzo.
Our big nothing
Can a love story survive the knowledge that all of us are replaceable in the life of the person living alongside us? A poignant debut novel that presents an unsolvable dilemma and touches the heart. A new, powerful voice that, as it reflects on the meaninglessness of our existence, is both romantic and disenchanted, with unexpected moments of lightheartedness. “If the universe were to stop, even for just a second, gravity would make it collapse upon itself. This is why, even though I have just died, the planets continue to wheel around their stars, the galaxies continue to expand away from each other, and you turn the key in the door of what, until a few hours ago, had been our home”. The protagonist of this story is thirty years old and about to get married. But a few days before the wedding, he is killed in a road accident. From that moment on, blocked in a suspended dimension, he recounts what happens to his companion without him, following her step by step from the moment she returns to the apartment they shared. Bit by bit, her initial, piercing pain turns into permeating melancholy and her life starts anew, in a new city, with a new job, with a new man, who she marries this time and with whom she has children. Until the day when, by now an elderly woman, she comes across an old photograph of herself with her first love and is overwhelmed by memories. In an intimate and emotional dialogue, speaking directly to the person he calls “the big-eyed girl”, the narrator alternates moments in a time that moves inexorably forward – even in his absence – with fragments of the past, of a relationship that seemed unique. But what if things didn’t exactly go that way? What if the protagonist hadn’t died and had only imagined or dreamed the events he is recounting? What would happen to their relationship, now that he has discovered that he isn’t indispensable in her life? By an up-and-coming author of contemporary theatre, the novel – with a compassionate and occasionally ironic gaze – reflects on the nature of relationships and their exclusivity, and shows our selfish and unspeakable desire for the world to end with us.
Emanuele Aldrovandi (Reggio Emilia 1985) is one of Italy’s playwrights whose works have been staged most often in recent years. His works have been translated and performed in English, German, French, Spanish, Polish, Slovenian, Czech, Romanian, Catalan, and Arabic. He has written and directed various short films, including Bataclan, which won a Silver Ribbon in 2021. This is his first novel.
Notre grand néant
Peut-on encore aimer en sachant que l’on est remplaçable pour la personne qui nous est chère ? L’histoire d’une obsession qui nous touche tous, ou qui nous a tous touchés. Un premier roman qui déconcerte, bouleverse et émeut. Dans quelques jours, il aurait épousé la jeune fille aux grands yeux, s’il n’était pas mort dans un accident de la route. Et maintenant, il la voit revenir dans ce qui était leur maison, trouver son ordinateur sur la table et les pantoufles qu’elle lui avait offertes dans le couloir, là où il les avait laissées. La tasse, quant à elle, est posée sur le bord de l’évier : elle y plonge son nez et fond en larmes. Elle ne veut pas manger, même si sa mère insiste, elle a perdu l’appétit. Puis, distraitement, elle boit une gorgée de café, mord dans un biscuit et s’étonne de le trouver délicieux, comme avant sa mort, comme toujours. C’est peut-être à ce moment-là que commence son difficile retour à la vie, et c’est sa voix qui le raconte. Jour après jour, il voit défiler l’existence de celle qui change de ville, se marie, a des enfants, capturant les instantanés d’un temps qui ne lui appartient pas ; il les alterne avec les souvenirs d’un amour qu’il croyait unique. Mais s’il avait la possibilité de revivre, comment réagirait-il à la certitude que son grand amour, en un instant, pourrait ne plus rien laisser derrière lui ? Avec légèreté et désenchantement, Emanuele Aldrovandi s’interroge sur la nature des relations, mettant en scène le désir indicible que le monde s’arrête avec nous. « Si l’univers restait immobile, ne serait-ce qu’une seconde, la gravité le ferait s’effondrer sur lui-même. C’est pourquoi, même si je viens de mourir, les planètes continuent de tourner autour de leurs étoiles, les galaxies continuent de s’éloigner les unes des autres et tu tournes la clé dans la serrure de ce qui était encore notre maison il y a quelques heures ».
Emanuele Aldrovandi (Reggio Emilia, 1985) est l’un des auteurs de théâtre les plus représentés ces dernières années en Italie ; ses œuvres ont été traduites et mises en scène en anglais, allemand, français, espagnol, polonais, slovène, tchèque, roumain, catalan et arabe. Pour le cinéma, il a écrit et réalisé plusieurs courts métrages, dont Bataclan, lauréat du Nastro d’argento en 2021. Il s’agit ici de son premier roman.
