Abuso e consumo

by Brambilla, Andrea
Abuso e consumo

Year 2511. Don Marco Garegnani, a thirty-five-year-old Lombard priest on a mission in a parish in Mexico City, is unexpectedly summoned by Pope Matthew VI for a significant assignment in the New Worlds—specifically, Fireglen, the ultra-modern colony on Mars. For centuries, humans have settled on the Red Planet, creating a hyper-consumerist, individualist, hedonistic, and utilitarian society controlled by the all-seeing, omnipresent Network Cosmo, the social system that regulates life on the planet and determines, among other things, the crucial social rating of Martians.
After a traumatic journey, during which he meets Esperanza, an Argentine immigrant seeking a better future in the New Worlds, Don Marco arrives on Mars determined to carry out—or at least begin—his mission. He finds work as a private tutor for Jupiter Pendragon, heir to the powerful Pendragon family, which holds the economic power of the Red Planet.
Soon, Don Marco realizes that human society on Mars has gone too far: in its frantic search for better worlds, it has bent science to its will and mastered the laws of Nature, but lost the core traits of humanity—family bonds, love, sacrifice, and emotions. Guided by his unwavering faith, Don Marco makes the search for a shred of humanity his life mission—and discovers something deeply disturbing hidden behind the sterile algorithm of Network Cosmo…
