Al tempo delle officine. Dialogo immaginario con Eusebio Garavini, carrozziere
by Garavini, Daniela
Eusebio Garavini (1881–1947), the son of farm laborers and nearly illiterate, emigrated in 1898 from a small village in Romagna to Turin. He worked as a factory laborer, studied in the evenings, and within a few years established a coachbuilding company that would eventually employ more than 700 workers. In an imaginary dialogue with a granddaughter he never met, Eusebio retraces the key moments of his private and public life. He recounts his family origins, his meeting with his wife, and his relationship with his children, as well as the choices he made during the defining events of the twentieth century: the Belle Époque and the Great War; the “biennio rosso” and the occupation of factories; the rise of Fascism, the 1929 economic crisis and its consequences for his business; the Second World War, the Resistance, and the 1946 institutional referendum. The narrative is based on family memories and archival documents.
