Cinquemila chilometri al secondo
by Fior, Manuele
Leaving. Putting five thousand kilometers between yourself and your past, both geographical and existential, and realizing that you don’t belong anywhere. In the impossible combination of the opposing desires to escape and return to one’s roots lies a masterful portrait, at once detached and affectionate, of a generation that is precarious even in its affections. After a sudden breakup, Piero and Lucia move away, she to Norway, where she meets the man who will become the father of her child, he to Cairo to work as an archaeologist. Nicola, Piero’s best friend and the bold soul of the adolescent triangle, stays behind. Years later, Piero and Lucia are unable to forget, to fill the void nourished by the illusions of distance, and, back home, they decide to meet again. As the tones of the watercolor suggest, the bright colors of youthful love will not await them here, but only its dull, illusory echo.
