Eva dorme
by Melandri, Francesca
Eva is asleep when her mother Gerda receives a package addressed to her and sends it back to the sender, thus changing her destiny. She feels as if she has slept through other important moments in her life. But not now. Now, awakened by a ringing telephone, Eva boards a train and, as she travels the thousand-plus kilometres separating Brunico from Reggio Calabria, she rereads the story of a troubled love affair: that of Gerda, a German-speaking South Tyrolean and courageous single mother, and Vito, the carabiniere who is waiting for Eva at the other end of the peninsula. It is also the bitter story of Gerda’s father, Hermann Huber, born into a very poor farmhouse, who was only a child when, after the First World War, a piece of Austrian Tyrol was assigned to Italy, instilling in him the seed of revenge. A family saga and historical novel, Eva dorme is a powerful story of struggle and reconciliation that has made it a beloved long-seller, translated all over the world.
