Ghiaccio. Viaggio nel continente che scompare
by Tedesco Marco, Flores D'Arcais Alberto, Tedesco Marco, Flores D'Arcais AlbertoAn icy patina envelops the edge of the world. A metaphysical landscape of ice and silence stretches unbroken under a sun as still as a sentence. Within this whiteness – divine, pure, violent – primordial energies unfold, and prehistoric fossils coexist with microscopic creatures whose lives challenge the eternal. If there is a place to look for the future of the planet and interrogate its history, it is Greenland, the Queen Island of the Arctic Circle. Glaciologist Marco Tedesco, one of the world’s leading experts on climate change, guides us to discover the land of ice. His is an adventurous scientific account of the expedition he conducted in the Arctic, among long journeys through the snow, lakes that collapse disappearing into the blue in a few minutes, improbable polar camels and gigantic meteorite debris. An itinerary that is also a reflection on our tomorrow through the disappearance of the present, from the dangerous rise in water levels to the crazy marches of white bears towards the hinterland in search of food; up to the ever-increasing practicability of routes that were once inviolable, such as the legendary ‘Northwest Passage’, which are now even beaten by expensive tourist cruises. Ice, written by Marco Tedesco with Alberto Flores d’Arcais, is the tale of a mysterious and uninhabited land, in which the operations of the researchers alternate with the epic of the great Arctic explorers and the lesser-known explorers, and the legends of the rare local populations. A journey to the limits of the human, in search of answers that only the silent ice can hold.
