Senator Ugo Da Como’s holograph last will and testament establishes the institution – after death – of an independent cultural foundation with the headquarter in Lonato “the main aim will be the benefit from my art and history collections, books, Incunaboli, Codex, Manuscripts in order to rouse young people the interest towards the knowledge: at the same time, it will keep being a worthy place to visit, drawing guests to my beloved town.”
The last will and testament recognizes in the Cittadella di cultura either a research facility or great interesting tourist site.
Centro per il Libro e la Lettura (Book and Reading Centre) aims to realize book circulation and Reading Policies in Italy, as well as the promotion of the book and Italian culture abroad, proposing as reference point for the professional world in all its features and as well as meeting point, communication and exchange centre among public and private workers, who daily work in different environments of production, knowledge and book circulation.
In the main case the Centre, in accordance with the 25 January 2010 Decree no. 34 of the President of the Republic, “promotes the conception, the design and creation of thematic publishing programs”, “it promotes and realizes, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (…) updated Book Circulation, Culture Policies and the knowing of Italian writers abroad, through a long-time planning of Intervention strategy in relation to participation to International Book Fairs and to support translations, as well as according to specific cultural agreements”, “promotes and organizes events in Italy and abroad, which are aimed to spread Italian publishing production and in general the culture of reading.”
The Centre and the Foundation take into consideration their institutional aims and the complementarity concerning their specific topics and desire to cooperate together to promote Contemporary Literature related to translation from Italian to German, English and French languages, in regard to the flow of tourism of the linguistic area which is drawn to Garda area and in view of international events Paris Book Fair (2023) and Frankfurt Book Fair (2024) where Italy will be the Honor Guest.
The first project which will be active thanks to the subscribing of the Agreement that expects the realization – in Lonato, at the Foundation headquarter – of a one-month summer residence in favor of foreign translators of Italian books, especially interested to current affairs journalism and literary essays concerning scientific, medical, tradition and society, technology, Literature, Philosophy divulgation etc.
The residence will host foreign translators interested in the development of essay writing projects from Italian to other foreign languages and it will take place during July (first edition: July 2022).
It is published a Competition Announcement in order to assign the vacant positions, which are addressed to German, English and French native speaker translators, in the number of 2 vacant positions for each mentioned language.
