Il Giglio Bianco di Stalingrado (The White Lily of Stalingrad) is the first volume in a series dedicated to the great air battles of the past, but above all to the pilots who took part in them, their courage and their self-sacrifice. The human toll among pilots from the various nations at war was extremely high. This was partly because many of them were young, often in their early twenties and with very little flying experience, which they necessarily acquired while fighting. Il Giglio Bianco di Stalingrado focuses on the exploits of a girl in her early twenties, a Soviet flying ace and pilot of a fighter plane, the Yakovlev Yak-1.
