Marrying a lunar imagery to a very concrete staging, Cristò has become a reference author in the Italian indie scene, with cult novels such as La carne (NEO 2020) and La meravigliosa lampada di Paolo Lunare (Terrarossa 2019). There used to be a house on the hillside on the edge of a small inland village, a family of five sharing the three rooms, the six chairs, the two mirrors and the many books neatly arranged on the shelves. But now, for the two old sisters left alone to inhabit it, that time is a repertoire of blurred, distant images. Even the present seems to be rarefied and, with it, social relationships. Having lost all contact with the inhabitants of the village at the bottom of the valley, they soon renounce even words, which they gradually begin to eliminate, going so far as to bury the hundreds of books to “make room for the silence” that occupies the house. Even memories seem to belong to a past that is hard to believe in. While death, as if by forgetfulness, spares the house, Teresa, almost a hundred years old, inaugurates a symbiotic life with the plants she cultivates, transforming them into confidantes, companions. The lights in the village at the bottom of the valley are getting fewer and fewer, the howling of the wolves from the surrounding woods closer and closer, until one day, Teresa makes an impossible decision. Between Ágota Kristóf and Tommaso Landolfi, Cristò returns with a metaphorical but very concretely novel about the correspondence between human being and nature, the power of language and the illusion of freedom. A novel unparalleled in contemporary Italian fiction, a dense tale of metaphorical and powerful fantasy.

Il y avait une maison sur la colline à la lisière d’un petit village de l’arrière-pays, une famille de cinq personnes se partageant les trois pièces, les six chaises, les deux miroirs et les nombreux livres rangés sur les étagères. Mais aujourd’hui, pour les deux vieilles sœurs qui vivent seules dans cette maison, ce temps n’est plus qu’un répertoire d’images floues et lointaines. Même le présent semble se raréfier, et avec lui, les relations sociales. Ayant perdu tout contact avec les habitants du village au fond de la vallée, elles renoncent bientôt même aux mots qu’elles commencent progressivement à éliminer, allant jusqu’à enterrer les centaines de livres pour « faire de la place au silence » qui occupe la maison. Même les souvenirs semblent appartenir à un passé auquel il est difficile de croire. Alors que la mort, comme par oubli, épargne la maison, Teresa, presque centenaire, inaugure une vie symbiotique avec les plantes qu’elle cultive, les transformant en confidentes, en compagnes. Les lumières dans le village au fond de la vallée sont de moins en moins nombreuses, les hurlements des loups dans les bois environnants de plus en plus proches, jusqu’à ce qu’un jour, Teresa prenne une décision impossible. Entre Ágota Kristóf et Tommaso Landolfi, Cristò, auteur de livres cultes tels que La carne et La meravigliosa lampada di Paolo Lunare, revient avec un roman métaphorique mais très concret sur la correspondance entre l’être humain et la nature, sur le pouvoir du langage et sur l’illusion de la liberté.
