La buona educazione
by Bignardi, Alice
A good education is what Antonella had always tried to pass on to her daughter. The meticulousness of her teachings are carved into Lisa’s memory like a scar.
Lisa has just lost her mother. Her family is in mourning, but she has some trouble processing the event. Her mother was a person with a strange but beautiful face. Most importantly, Antonella was one specific kind of mother with Lisa, a completely different kind to her sister, another to her brother and definitely a very different wife to her father. Lisa can’t help but feel she got the short end of the stick.
Ever since she was about six years old, she was forced to turn into a sponge − absorbing Antonella’s obsessive teachings: what to eat and how, and how much, what to wear, how to talk, walk, behave, breathe. Every day she was constantly judged, reviewed, and corrected. Until Antonella got sick.
This is, in fact, the story of Antonella’s illness, not as it really went down, but as her daughter Lisa remembers it. Reality and memory are completely separate matters.
