La dittatura degli algoritmi. Dalla lotta di classe alla class action
by Landi, Paolo
What do algorithms have to do with class struggle? Algorithms were already being discussed in the 9th century, as the term itself is a Latin transcription of the name of the Persian mathematician Al-Khwarizmi. Today, the word is surrounded by an aura of modernity, propelled by the computational formulas that govern our digital lives. Class struggle, on the other hand, seems like such an outdated expression that resurrecting it as an analytical tool for our times is the challenge of this pamphlet. It attempts to explain current social phenomena in simple terms, as an eternal competition between submission and power.
On social networks, divisions, antagonisms, and hostilities persist—they simply undergo psycho-sociological updates. Algorithms, working to group the people of the web into statistical units and subsets, are the modern rulers of the masses. They guide and manipulate them, and these masses—who are dependent on social networks, using them on 91% of the Earth’s surface—continue to be exploited by digital capitalism in a new way, without even realizing it.
Paolo Landi explores this invisible technological dictatorship, the transformation of labor, and the resulting redefinition of social groups, within the illusory mobility encouraged by the fake democracy of the Internet. Meanwhile, models and aspirations are changing, pointing toward a future where the homo novus will be a “digital twin” reshaped by technology.
