La fossa dei lupi o come proseguono I promessi sposi
by Pastor, Ben
Milan, 1631. Italo-Spanish lieutenant of the law Diego Antonio Olivares is investigating the death of the Innominato (“the perfect penitent” Bernardino Visconti, who repented after his life as an outlaw), killed on a mountain path above Lecco. Despite the initial lack of clues, Olivares discovers that, even though, apparently, the Unnamed died while travelling by night for one of his acts of charity, his death has left a sizeable inheritance and a web of interests that could suggest something else. In an era of witchcraft and poisonings, anything – including the fantastical – is possible.
Suspicion falls on the large, powerful Visconti family, who resent the way the Unnamed would “squander” money on alms. Among the other people “informed of the events”, we have, naturally, the main characters from The Betrothed: Renzo and Lucia, (the young couple are expecting a child), their respective mother-in-law and mother Agnese, as well as the priest Don Abbondio, since they all had dealing with the victim.
On the backdrop of a receding Plague, surrounded by superstition and violence, Olivares will face slums, mercenaries and lies, delving deep in the Manzonian world to bring justice to the case.
