La traduction dans une perspective de genre. Enjeux politiques, éditoriaux et professionnels
by Sara Amadori Cécile Desoutter Chiara Elefante Roberta Pederzoli (eds.)The theoretical framework of this book is that of translation conceived from a gender perspective: according to this framework, language is never neutral, and any speech act has a political dimension and repercussions from a cultural and social point of view. The book is a collection of essays that address some major topics in this field. It opens with a general reflection on the difficult circulation of gender studies terminology and concepts at the transnational level as well as on the problems created by their translation. Translation is also thought of as a professional activity: the experience of Barbara Bray as an intercultural mediator for the BBC is then presented as a political act of commitment by an exceptional translator. The issue of ‘gender bias’ in machine translation, of great interest today, is the subject of an analysis aimed at identifying its causes and suggesting possible solutions. These essays are followed by studies that focus on the publishing of translated literary texts: the problem of how to translate a non-binary language is taken into consideration, as well as the editorial policies of various publishing houses of children’s literature. These two areas have only very recently been addressed by gender studies and open up new and fruitful research perspectives.
