Words Hurt More Than Blows: Carolina’s Message on Cyberbullying

For the first time, Paolo Picchio tells the story of his daughter Carolina in a book. She was a victim of cyberbullying in 2013. Having become an icon in the fight against this form of violence, Carolina tragically passed away at just 14 years old after a video was shared online without her consent, leaving behind a heartfelt farewell letter. Her complaint, made before the tragic outcome, allowed the Juvenile Court of Turin to hold the first cyberbullying trial in Italy.
Thanks to her father’s efforts — who in 2018 founded a foundation in her name — this also led to the first European law protecting minors online and to the establishment of an official Anti-Cyberbullying Day, promoted by the Ministry of Education.

Picchio, Paolo

Paolo Picchio fought for the approval of the first law protecting minors online, dedicated to Carolina Picchio. In 2018, he entrusted his daughter’s message to the Carolina Onlus Foundation, of which he serves as Honorary President. Together with the Foundation’s educators and trainers, he has met over 120,000 young people in the first three years of activity, sharing his testimony with new generations, who today know him as “Papa Picchio.”
