Summer 1899: the young brigadier Ghibaudo is transferred from Piedmont to a small town in the northern part of the Sardinia’s island..The world that awaits him there is profoundly different from Turin, where he grew up, and it doesn’t take long for Ghibaudo to realize it: there are many crimes but few charges, indicating that in those lands, justice isn’t settled in the rooms of the police station. So it comes as a surprise when Lianora, a recently widowed commoner, asks him for help for a theft. When the brigadier arrives at her house, he finds however a dead body in her bedroom. After a closer look, he identifies him as one of his colleagues. The suspicions fall on Anania, one of the family’s farmhands, but some clues lead Ghibaudo to believe the truth lies elsewhere. And while a secret stirs in the brigadier’s heart (which he will have to deal with for the rest of his life), someone starts killing off  the street rhymers who wander from town to town denouncing iniquities…
