Since Shinto is not a founded religion, there is no teaching of the founder, much less a divine revelation. All the basic ideas are popular beliefs, as transmitted in sacred texts, as well as the ethical vision developed throughout the history of Shinto. Also important was the contribution of some intellectuals of the Edo period kokugaku, who tried to bring out a new Japanese paradigm that departed from Chinese ideas, which had long exerted influence on Japanese culture.
