Storia di chi fugge e di chi resta. L’amica geniale. Vol. 3

by Ferrante, Elena
Storia di chi fugge e di chi resta. L’amica geniale. Vol. 3

Elena and Lila, the two friends whose story readers have come to know through My Brilliant Friend and The Story of a New Name, have grown into women. They did so very early on: Lila married at sixteen, has a young son, has left her husband and a life of comfort, and now works as a factory worker in extremely harsh conditions; Elena left the neighbourhood, studied at the Normale in Pisa and published a successful novel that opened the doors to a wealthy and cultured world for her. Both have tried to break through the barriers that sought to confine them to a fate of poverty, ignorance and submission. Now they navigate, at the breakneck pace to which Elena Ferrante has accustomed us, the vast open sea of the 1970s – a landscape of hopes and uncertainties, of tensions and challenges hitherto unthinkable – always bound together by an extremely strong, ambivalent bond, at times hidden beneath the surface, at times resurfacing in violent outbursts or in encounters that open up unexpected perspectives.
