La Barabuia
by Nanni, Gabriele
In Rimini, the arrival of a travelling amusement park opens up once again what everyone calls the Sita, the abandoned garage for old buses, which has been closed for almost fifty years, at the end of Via Piccinino. Ias, Campus and his sister Tamara live on that street.
When they take Ias’s little sister Camilla to the amusement park, something tragic happens: the little girl runs away frightened by the Snake Man’s show and is found half an hour later in the tall grass, unconscious. She has fallen into a coma. No one can imagine that the cause of it all is the Barabuia, an evil creature that has been imprisoned in the Sita since the last century.
The Barabuia is a blind spirit who can sense the presence of children, but only when their frequency is not disturbed by adults: she perceives them but cannot distinguish them from the daughter she was carrying when she was killed. And now she wants her soul back. Ferociously.
A novel about loss: the temporary loss of Camilla and the permanent loss of innocence among a group of friends.

Nanni, Gabriele
Gabriele Nanni grew up amidst the stories of old fishermen from his neighbourhood, the Barafonda. He encountered children’s literature while collaborating to the first editions of the festival Mare di Libri. He has published the novels Il numero 5 (Piemme, Premio Battello a Vapore) and L’impero invisibile (Pelledoca editore, White Ravens 2020), and the short story L’ultima estate (Gallucci). He lives in Rimini and always returns to his Barafonda when he can. Apparently, many stories are hidden there.
