In the year of our Lord 774. The balance of the known world rests upon the cities of the Network of Holy Protectors. As long as every cog in this order is guided by blind faith and righteousness, the Divine Plan will remain intact and God’s will shall be upheld. Yet in Ticinum – capital of the Lombard kingdom and guardian of the gates of hell – sin is taking on new forms. The mist that transforms the ungodly into monsters has grown thicker, and the serpent of the lust for power whispers in the ears of the Patron Saints. Adelca, First Guardian of the Order of Concord, is but one of hundreds of women who, every day, don the colour of blood and wield the most powerful words of the sacred scriptures to flush out and condemn the monsters of sin. But something begins to change when the Ticino, the city’s river, ceases to ferry souls to hell. The mist becomes ever-present, Pope Adrian demands proof of faith, and the shadow of the Franks begins to bear down on Ticinum’s role in God’s order. The future takes on the contours of the Apocalypse on the one hand and the end of the Lombard kingdom on the other. Who has stopped the ferrying of souls to hell? And why? Amidst corrupt saints and bearing the cross of her own martyrdom upon her shoulders, Adelca is forced to use the Word of God to discover who is undermining the safety of the city and the world. But amidst the corruption of the mist and the soul, her task is far more arduous. She must decide what to burn with the fire of divine wrath that has consumed her ever since she was locked in the Order’s cage: everything she encounters, in a vengeance destined to reduce all to ashes, or only those who have dared to take God’s place in deciding the fate of humanity.
