In a Europe facing new economic, environmental and social challenges, a radical shift in thinking is needed: we must move beyond blind faith in GDP growth as the only way to reduce poverty and tackle the challenges facing the planet’s future. By exposing the contradictions of a model that sacrifices social justice and environmental sustainability on the altar of competitiveness, this book challenges the dominant narrative linking well-being and economic development. It proposes a rediscovery of the founding values of a social Europe and the need for a genuine transition towards a fair and truly sustainable economy, centred on real needs and geared towards reducing inequalities. Starting from an interpretation of reality rooted in the social doctrine of the Church, the book explores paths towards a transformative reflection on the economy and invites us to imagine a Europe capable of combining climate justice, inclusion and rights, able to challenge the myth of infinite growth.
