Gigio the Ferret book series contain illustrated stories, easy-to-follow recipes, songs, and music. They were created with the idea of ​​introducing children to healthy eating by leveraging their sensory abilities: touch, taste, hearing, and sight. They are an integral part of the educational program approved by the Italian Ministry of Education, University, and Research (MIUR). The stories are by Maria Chiara Ferri, the illustrations by Giusi Matilde Schiavi, and the songs by Melody Castellari.

The original Gigio Furetto project originates from teacher Maria Chiara Ferri’s professional experience, with the aim of providing educators and families with effective tools to get in touch with children through the act of healthy eating. The topic of cooking is treated as an opportunity to come together and demonstrate how much can be achieved with a book, music, and… goodwill.

Gigio the Ferret books, translated into various languages, can be useful in schools, where nutrition becomes culture, recipes become formulas, music becomes experimentation, and drama workshops become entertainment.  In libraries, the book becomes an animated fairy tale and a guided search on specialized websites and videos. At home, many families are rediscovering the pleasure of cooking with their children by experimenting with easy recipes recommended by Gigio the Ferret. All the recipes in the books are supervised by nutritionists and dietitians.

Gigio the Ferret Educational Project has already been adopted in several schools and educational centers in Italy and Cuba. Early experiences were captured in a film that was successfully presented at Vivaio Scuola at EXPO 2015, receiving widespread acclaim from the media and networks, as well as recognition from cultural and art centers, including the Royals of Spain and the United Kingdom. YouTube videos showing field experiences, songs released by Level49, the show “Cosa Bolle in Pentola” by Manicomics Teatro, video stories narrated by Giancarlo Cattaneo, the appearance on Luca Bottura’s program Lateral (Radio Capital), and participation in numerous literary fairs have contributed to spreading the project since its inception.
