Gli esercizi di Patañjali. Contro la vorticosità delle affezioni della vita abitudinaria

Gli esercizi di Patañjali. Contro la vorticosità delle affezioni della vita abitudinaria

Moods, relational discomforts and physical ailments have tormented the human animal for centuries, overwhelmed by the swirling and frightening waves of daily life, everywhere and always marked by uncertainty and precarious equilibrium.
The 195 ‘propositions’ (sūtra) and exercises contained in the Yogasūtra of Patañjali, an author who lived in India between the fourth and fifth centuries A.D., were arranged in response to the agonies arising from this background scenario. Nothing is known of the life of the author of this short Sanskrit treatise, but his work influenced many yoga schools and traditions in South Asia and later in Europe.
Identifying ‘not seeing things as they are’ (avidyā) as the root cause of all the discomforts and afflictions that afflict the human animal, Patañjali concocted his own original ‘methodical path’ (yoga), entirely immanent and aimed at immunity from the disturbances of the ‘whirling plexus of cognitions and affections’, which he designated by the term cittaṛtti.
