Stuttgart : Writing beyond one’s mother tongue

On 17 May, at 7 p.m., at the library of the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (Charlottenplatz 17, Stuttgart) a debate will take place on the theme “Reading, understanding, representing Europe: Multicultural Europe and writing”.

Speakers: Helena Janeczek, Zsuzsa Bánk, Nils Trede.

The event, organised by the Italian Cultural Institute, the Institut Français, the Liszt-Institut, the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen, is part of the 1st Stuttgart Literature Festival (11.05. – 21.05.2023).

Multicultural societies in Europe have enriched the literary scene. Writers who write in a language that was not originally their mother tongue will discuss this topic: Helena Janeczek, who was awarded the ‘Strega Prize’ in Italy for her novel La ragazza con la Leica; the award-winning Hungarian-born author Zsuzsa Bánk and the German-French author Nils Trede. What unites them and how do they experience writing in a multicultural and multilingual context?
