The German-Italian Literary Translation Prize
The German-Italian Literary Translation Prize is organised by the Federal Government’s Commissioner for Culture and Media (BKM) together with the Italian Ministry of Culture (MiC) and is awarded in cooperation with the German Academy in Rome Villa Massimo, the Goethe House, the Goethe-Institut in Rome, the Italian Institute for German Studies, the Italian Cultural Institute in Berlin, the Italian Embassy and the Literarisches Colloquium in Berlin. Every two years, the prize is awarded alternately to an important translation from German into Italian or from Italian into German. In the intervening years, workshops for translators are held alternately in Berlin and Rome. The prize money for the best translation is €10,000. In addition, a Debut Prize is awarded for a stay in Germany. The 13th edition of the Prize, which will be awarded for the translation of a German literary work into Italian, will take place in spring 2022 at the German Academy in Rome Villa Massimo.
Conditions for participation
Eligible for the Prize are translations from German into Italian
that fall into the fiction category (excluding essays and children’s books),
which have been published by a publishing house in Italy since 2018 or are due to be published in 2021. Only the quality of the translation will be assessed and rewarded.
