Antonio Magnano, a young Sicilian man, is so beautiful women are poleaxed with lust simply by looking at him. He is the only child of  an upper middle-class couple from Catania (Sicily) and when he returns home in 1934 after spending several years in Rome, his father hopes that the social connections Antonio made with politically important people in the Fascist government will help the family’s fortune. A marriage is arranged with Barbara, the beautiful daughter of one of Catania’s most notable families. A year after their marriage however the scandal erupts: Barbara is still a virgin! The bride’s family attempt to annul the marriage and Antonio’s honour is irrevocably lost.

Brancati Vitaliano

Vitaliano Brancati (1907 – 1954) was a writer, novelist and screenwriter. He became famous for  Don Giovanni in Sicilia (1941), Il bell’Antonio (1949) and and Paolo il caldo (1955),  which satirizes, with a touch of grotesque, Italy during the fascist years. Il bell’Antonio was made into a film directed by Mauro Bolognini with the screenplay by P.P.Pasolini starring Marcelo Mastroianni and Claudia Cardinale.
