Il gioco di Santa Oca
by Pariani LauraBonaventura Mangiaterra is a chieftain who charms his comrades with a personal and rebellious version of Bible stories. Bonaventura soon becomes a legend among the peasants and the poor: he has charisma, wisdom and a loose tongue with which he preaches freedom, and soon his band grows in number and strength, threatening the established power. To put down the revolt, the Inquisition and the nobles of the area deploy treacherous spies and a mighty army, but when they manage to get to Bonaventura, a surprise will challenge all their certainties. Twenty years later, the storyteller Pùlvara retraces the same moors that experienced the epic of Bonaventura and his band. In her youth, she had joined those valiant men by disguising herself as a boy and now, in exchange for hospitality, she tells the peasants of their exploits. As those heroic deeds come to life in her words, Pùlvara gets closer and closer, as in a game that becomes real, to the mystery of Bonaventura Mangiaterra’s life.
