Il mondo di Giulia
by Necchi, Maria Teresa
The book tells the story of Giulia, a seventeen-year-old girl.
Giulia was thrust into life violently. She never knew her parents and was raised and educated by a caring and loving grandmother. Her childhood and adolescence were spent in a peculiar, all-female family, without a father figure.
This would suggest that she reached seventeen in a cocoon of protection and defence, like a sort of bubble.
None of this, as she was allowed to travel, meet people, cultivate friendships, and have contact with the outside world.
Giulia is about to enter the adult world and feels disoriented, perceiving an unfair and complicated environment. For this reason, she decides to create her own universe, a fantastical place where humans, elves, trolls, and legendary creatures coexist in harmony and happiness, guided by a profound sense of empathy. She refuses to remain silent; she wants to proclaim that it is possible to change and live differently.
These are concepts not described in the book, encapsulated in the title “Giulia’s World” and left to the reader’s imagination.
Thus, the reader is forcefully, almost violently, immersed in fairytale-like situations, with idealized and mythologized protagonists, yet they subtly represent situations that describe the almost banal living conditions that humans renew every day.
At the same time, the reader is immersed in a fairytale atmosphere in which the banality of events takes on a different meaning. A new light and a new harmony envelop them and make them participate in the event. By the end of the story, he has gained a new understanding of the emotions, thoughts, and experiences of the fictional characters, who are humanized and connected to the real world in which he spends his life.
The work, structured into ten stories, is not simply an escape from reality, but a true inner journey. Through the adventures of the various protagonists of the story, Luce, Terry, Henry, Roby, Stilus, Gunnar, Magnus, Pythagoras, JM-Rap, Little Red, Strokkur, and all the others, author Maria Teresa Necchi invites readers to reflect on human values and today’s society.
“Giulia’s World” aims to be a life manual for rediscovering the importance of kindness, solidarity, and a positive outlook, demonstrating that an existence based on empathy is possible, and it is up to us to build it and decide for a better destiny for our species.
