Il presidente addormentato

by Caria, Gianni
Il presidente addormentato

For the first time in the history of Italy, the highest office of state is held by a woman, Anita Bertoli, an intellectual and activist, daughter of a longtime politician and former partisan. The president falls suddenly ill, collapses on the large desk in her room at the Quirinale, and from there, while still alert, is unable to move. The country finds itself – like her – completely paralyzed: without her approval, the government cannot operate, and the other offices of state do not act to resolve the impasse.
Tied to her fate of immobility is that of a young corazziere, in charge to watch over her and the gradually thinning visitors. In an empty and desolate hospital ward, the soldier reflects on his life and on the ultimate meaning of his role and his very existence: to obey orders and fulfill his duty.
