Il sentimento del ghetto
by De Angelis, Luca
«I always carry the bars within me,» Kafka confided to his friend Gustav Janouch. This book investigates the Jewish people’s distinctive modes of literary expression, focusing on the characteristic feeling of the ghetto that Elena Loewenthal describes as «a place that each one of us still carries inside, which we all hide within the folds of our heart, in our dreams at
night, and in a strange and unquenched thirst for open spaces». Luca de Angelis traces this inner cosmography by journeying through the Jewish literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, studying authors such as Kafka, Sangwill, Svevo, Bassani, Saba, and many more.
