For Carmen, the death of her parents ushers in a season of deep uncertainty. She is haunted by the quiet questions of grief: Was I a good enough daughter? Is there a socially acceptable way to express sadness?

In the midst of this crisis, she must also confront the sudden fragility of her most intimate relationships, from old friendships to romantic bonds. Seeking an anchor in the physical world, she turns to the earth: the plants that fill her home, the soil her father loved, and the enduring presence of olive trees. Guiding her through this jagged landscape of mourning are the diaries of the past both her own and those of strangers. Through the miracle of writing, she collapses the boundaries of time and space to hold a dialogue with her younger self, her family history, and even the stark narratives of war and imprisonment.

As she navigates her loss, literary giants who once interrogated the nature of pain – Joan Didion, Susan Sontag, and Paul Auster become living presences. They illuminate her grief, giving it a name and making it, finally, a place where one can live. A memoir of inexhaustible literary depth, it speaks to anyone who has ever walked through the shadow of loss. It reaches out a hand to our collective solitude, transforming a deeply personal experience into a shared testament. Because, ultimately, life remains stronger than any ending.

Solferino

Solferino

Solferino editore made its debut in the spring of 2018, publishing fiction, non-fiction and children’s books by both Italian and international authors. From the outset, its aim has been to establish a distinctive editorial voice that is at once authoritative and curious, innovative and rigorous. Through its books, the publishing house seeks to offer readers stories, investigations and narratives that, in all their diversity — from topical essays to major novels — contribute to truth, critical reflection and civic engagement.

Attention to writing, the value of editorial craftsmanship, and a commitment to the ethical, social and political issues of our time are the guiding principles of our work. We believe that publishing is, above all, a process of discovery: Solferino invests in new voices while bringing together established authors and emerging talents within its catalogue. The common thread is the originality of each proposal, together with the strength and distinctiveness of its style.

Beginning with its very name — Via Solferino 28 has been the headquarters of Corriere della Sera since 1904 — the publishing house highlights its close connection with the historic newspaper, which has been home to renowned writers such as Dino Buzzati, Italo Calvino, Eugenio Montale, Gabriele D’Annunzio, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Oriana Fallaci, and many other leading figures of Italian culture. Its relationship with Corriere della Sera and the other publications of the RCS Group is based on inspiration, editorial freedom, and mutual independence.

Solferino
