La fine della Silicon Valley. Architettura del capitalismo digitale

by Malfona, Lina
La fine della Silicon Valley. Architettura del capitalismo digitale

In the digital age, Silicon Valley was considered the world’s largest hub of information technology and the most powerful metaphor for the United States and its technocentric model. But in the post-digital era, it might come to be seen as a museum of that era—an illusory city of technology that packages products assembled elsewhere. Until recently, the corporation was an entity that was both real and virtual, operating on economic and financial levels as well as on physical and geopolitical ones.
In the era of the humanization of digital technologies, however, the spread of remote work is accelerating its detachment from physical space, leading to the abandonment of the campus concept. Furthermore, the recent shift of the global economy’s center of gravity toward the East has highlighted how IT companies—whose production facilities are now located outside the United States—no longer need to maintain their headquarters there.
What, then, will the future of Silicon Valley hold? Will it become a region filled with new monuments that symbolize an architectural style now shaped by the logic of the AI market? Or will it remain merely a physical repository, an archive, and a widespread museum of digital culture? Or perhaps it already is?
The central thesis of this book is that, in any case, in the near future, the world’s largest technology hub will no longer be able to tell the complex story of the IT companies that made it famous.
