La spirale del sottosviluppo. Perché (così) l’Italia non ha futuro

A pamphlet that highlights the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on Italy and Europe structural problems, such as the inadequacy of our labour market, the delays in the training system, the paradox of a country that ignores the thousands of young people forced to emigrate every year and continues not to manage (and perhaps not understand) immigration.

We already know several things with certainty about the economic, social and cultural effects of Covid-19, whatever the duration of the emergency phase and no matter how predictable some fallout may be. And all the issues dealt with here (demography, immigration, emigration, education, work) will be very strongly impacted by what happened. That is why, now more than ever, it is urgent to make choices.

The most recent statistical studies attest to enormous demographic imbalances for Italy and Europe, which are destined to worsen. This state of affairs makes immigration necessary, because without it young people will find themselves having to support a system that is unsustainable for them and for the country. However, we are faced with a contradiction: on the one hand, our labour market needs foreign arms; on the other hand, it does not offer a sufficient number of qualified jobs, with the effect of worrying unemployment and emigration of people with high qualifications like graduates and diploma holders.

The result is a gigantic impoverishment of the human capital and, above all, a series of great imbalances. If policies are not implemented to address this situation – of which some examples are suggested – Italy\’s and Europe fate is to end up in a \’spiral of underdevelopment\’ even more serious than the economic crises of the past, from which it would be very difficult to recover. And not only because of the pandemic, here analyzed in its effects. But of the imbalances that preceded it, and that Covid-19 will limit itself to aggravating.
