This is the basis for the book’s basic idea: today working less is a goal that, perhaps unlike in the past, cannot be achieved ex lege by regulating the length of the working day, but requires a radical transformation that goes far beyond the confines of the labour market. A transformation towards a model of society in which work plays a less central role not only in terms of the organisation of daily life and time management, but also in terms of the construction of individual, political and social identities’. Essential conditions for bringing about this ‘revolution’, along with emancipation and the rejection of unsustainable work, are new and radical forms of income redistribution: ‘The conditions exist today for work to leave the horizon of necessity and obligation.
