Medea

by Petruccioli, Rita
Medea

Rita Petruccioli revisits the myth of Medea, exploring new and unusual angles. By choosing a space opera setting, the Roman author highlights the dynamics of the relationship between Medea and Jason and projects them onto the wider social context in which the two live. By telling a story that is, in some way, part of the general cultural heritage of all humanity – and is therefore timeless – she reflects on today’s society with its behavioural aberrations: the difficulty in accepting the role of women, and the tendency towards nativist and superstitious obscurantism that hinders progress and the expression of the will of the people; Everything in Petruccioli’s comic works to perfection, and as we follow the story of a headstrong foreign woman in Corinth, we see a reflection of our broken society, sensing a direction in which we might move to rebuild it. An epic, moving and deeply emotional book, yet also a ruthless analysis of the ills that afflict us and the roles imposed upon us.
