Repubblica

by Stassi, Claudio
Repubblica

Niceto Alcalá-Zamora was President of the Second Spanish Republic between 1931 and 1936. On the day of the proclamation, Fox Movietone filmed the event, but that footage remained hidden for decades in the home of the mayor of Priego de Córdoba, Francisco Adame, a friend of the President. In 2008, during renovation work on the house, it was discovered alongside a notebook that had belonged to a 10-year-old boy. This discovery gave rise to *Repubblica*, Claudio Stassi’s first graphic novel based on real events. Through the lives of Manolo and Isabel, two young people grappling with repression, the desire for freedom and family memories, Stassi weaves together grand history with personal stories, restoring a voice and dignity to those who endured the silence and fear of post-war Spain. With evocative artwork and powerful storytelling, the graphic novel recounts the resistance of the maquis and ordinary citizens, the fragility and strength of those who chose not to forget, and the hope that illuminates even the darkest moments of history.
