Shemal
by Albertini, NormannaIn 15th century Spain, Torquemada’s Inquisition rages on, and Elvira, a converted Jew, thus a “marrano,” endures the tortures of the Dominican inquisitors, resisting with pride.
What they want is for the young woman to admit to secretly “Judaizing.”
In the background, the expulsion of Jews and Arabs from Spain, the discovery of the new Indies, and the extermination of natives by the Conquistadors; all in an incessant race towards wealth at any cost.
Elvira is a woman who fights for her freedom, facing the violence of power, abuse, fear, and ignorance.
It is the terror of having to confront new diversities that forces the protagonists of the novel to come to terms with their past and a future destined to change the world.
