Un amore
by Buzzati, Dino
Milan, with its gigantic apartment buildings, small squares and tangled alleys, is both a portrait of the metropolis at a specific moment in history and a symbol of the Babel of all times. Against this backdrop moves the protagonist of Un amore: a man unaware that he has waited too long, who remains young at heart and believes that love can work miracles. And so the mature professional falls madly in love with a very young woman, but one already burdened with the cynical ruthlessness and moral fatigue of an era. Buzzati’s only erotic novel, Un amore surprised readers accustomed to the writer’s usual themes when it first appeared. Yet even these seemingly “different” pages continue the investigation into the anxieties of contemporary man – and of man tout court – exploring the dimension of feeling and describing the parable of true love, of exemplary clarity, destined to lose itself in lies as in a labyrinth.
