Viaggi di carta
by Pinto, Rocco
A picaresque novel written by a bookseller to tell, at times with a touch of fantasy, stories of booksellers who have ‘revolutionised’ the profession. It also offers a disenchanted view of the Italian publishing world and some of its most original figures. This novel takes us on a journey through the magical places of books, starting from Turin. The protagonist, Andrea, loses his job as a librarian because he cannot resist stopping to read passages while delivering books to customers. He decides to move to Barcelona in search of fortune and, after wandering around the city, realises that he can get back on his feet on the Rambla thanks to Sant Jordi, the patron saint of Catalonia. He dresses up as the saint and offers his readings to passers-by on the Rambla. This is where the daring adventures begin that will take him with Ginevra, Luna and other protagonists to Naples’ Port’Alba and the Abbagnale family, to Manuzio’s Venice, to Saba’s Trieste, but also to Abano Terme and Tribùk, where he encounters a strange gathering of booksellers and publishers. Our heroes will also arrive in Bologna, Pontremoli, Ventotene, Pietrasanta, Carloforte, Prali, Matera, Bari, Palermo, Procida and Marrakech, and they will not travel on horseback like Don Quixote or the protagonists of Morley’s The Travelling Parnassus, but on an Ape (a three wheeler vehicle) and a boat loaded with books.
