Dopo quindici anni di assenza, Alberto Gastaldi torna a Rambàgo, il suo paese natale sulle colline pisane. Lì, da ventenne, ha vissuto l’estate che avrebbe segnato per sempre la sua vita. Milan Juric è un ex combattente jugoslavo in fuga dai fantasmi della guerra in Bosnia Erzegovina, giunto in paese con il suo oscuro passato. Alfonso Fanella, nato in Sicilia nel 1989, si trasferisce a Genova all’età di quindici anni, dove tuttora vive. Si è laureato in Storia nel 2013, con una tesi sul conflitto serbo-croato degli anni Novanta e sul racconto che ne ha fatto il giornalismo italiano dell’epoca. Il suo primo romanzo, Storia di un fiume in piena, è stato pubblicato da De Ferrari Editore (Genova, 2024).

After a fifteen-year absence, Alberto Gastaldi returns to Rambàgo, his hometown in the hills of Pisa. It was there, in his twenties, that he experienced the summer that would forever shape his life. Milan Juric, a former Yugoslav fighter fleeing the ghosts of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, arrives in the village carrying his dark past with him. That same summer, Elisa also arrives, returning from England after the loss of her son. Both find a fragile form of redemption in Alberto: Elisa through a correspondence that evolves into an intimate yet ambiguous bond, and Juric by revealing to the young man the twisted allure of strength and violence. Dramatic events that summer upend the lives of Rambàgo and its inhabitants, while Elisa vanishes without a trace. What happened? Alberto will only discover the truth once he has confronted the fine line separating the fire that illuminates from the fire that destroys—a line that exists within every human being. Thus, The Fire We Buried becomes an emblematic novel about the struggles everyone faces in defining their own identity, balancing between contradictions, wounds, and desires that are never fully laid to rest.
Alfonso Fanella, born in Sicily in 1989, moved to Genoa at the age of fifteen, where he still resides. He graduated in History in 2013 with a thesis on the Serbo-Croatian conflict of the 1990s and how it was reported by Italian journalism at the time. His first novel, Storia di un fiume in piena, was published by De Ferrari Editore (Genoa, 2024).
Alfonso Fanella, nació en Sicilia en 1989, se trasladó a Génova a los quince años, donde aún reside. Se graduó en Historia en 2013 con una tesis sobre el conflicto serbio-croata de los años noventa y la cobertura que le dio el periodismo italiano en aquel entonces. Su primera novela, Historia de un río desbordado, fue publicada por De Ferrari Editore (Génova, 2024).
