Four versions of the same story. Four texts, published at different times and with slight variations in magazines, newspapers and anthologies, are brought together for the first time under a title that pays tribute to the hero – albeit unwittingly – who lends his name to the story: a ‘cockroach’ or, to use the author Domenico Rea’s own words, a ‘scarafaccio’, or even a ‘scarrafone’. The four appearances of the insect span a period of around twelve years, from 1964 to 1976, a significant period in the writer’s personal and intellectual life. Preserved at the Domenico Rea Archive at the University of Salerno, the four versions offer a glimpse into the Neapolitan author’s writing process and serve as ‘examples of style’, reflecting, on a smaller scale, the formal and thematic characteristics that have made his work famous.

Rea, Domenico
Domenico Rea (1921–1994) is one of the leading Italian writers of the twentieth century. He made his debut in 1945 in the magazine Mercurio with the short story La figlia di Casimiro Clarus. Two years later, his first collection of short stories, Spaccanapoli, was published. In 1951, his first novel, Una vampata di rossore, won the Naples Prize in 1959. More than thirty years after his first novel, he returned to the genre with Ninfa plebea (1992).
