The queen in pocket. Guida pop, dissacrante e definitiva su Elisabetta II a cento anni dalla nascita
by Grippa, Eva
In the collective imagination, she’s always the smiling old lady in pastel shades, with her iconic handbag clutched tightly in her arm and three strings of pearls around her neck. On her head, sometimes a dazzling royal crown, other times impeccably matched hats. An image that has become a fond and universal legend: the unmistakable Rainbow Queen. After seventy years of reign and ninety-six years of life, we thought we knew everything about her, or almost everything.
And yet, in the very year that marks the centenary of the birth of the most unforgettable of queens, this book finally throws open the doors to the royal family’s palace (and closets), revealing a very different sovereign from the one we thought we knew. One hundred voices, amidst unexpected revelations and unseemly twists, reveal the hidden side of an icon only superficially known. Eccentric habits, secret passions, alliances and nemeses, betrayals, unregal scandals, and irresistibly hilarious quotes reveal previously unseen fragments of an intimate and domestic universe, painting a portrait of a fearless yet profoundly human sovereign.
Because Elizabeth, besides being the stoic sovereign we all know, was also the little “Lilibeth”, dreamy but never naive, adored wife and fearsome “Top Lady”, skilled mechanic and lifeguard, passionate photographer and jockey.
Eva Grippa, a journalist and royal watcher with a penchant for gossip, and Ivan Canu, an illustrator and designer with a penchant for The Queen, bring us an exclusive royal gem that combines historical rigor with a flair for surprising detail. A narrative revelation that blends myth and reality, irreverent enough, designed for those who love a peek behind the scenes of history. Be warned: there’s a high risk of being left speechless.
