In the first photograph featured in the book, Rici is three years old and gazes directly and resolutely at the photographer’s lens: he is at the crèche in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, the orphanage where dedication and love save the youngest children from poverty and hunger. February 2022. In the final photograph, Rici is at the Winter Olympics in Beijing. He is twenty years old, has finished 34th in the slalom, and has lost none of that same determined look.
