Arte
by Argan Giulio Carlo , Trione Vincenzo
Among the numerous entries written by Giulio Carlo Argan over almost fifty years of contributions to the Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia, this volume encompasses three: Art, Architecture and Art Criticism. These entries dialogue with each other, testifying to the author’s ‘faith’ in the encyclopedic project as a lens into the interconnectedness of knowledge and erudition. The first essay, which embodies the heart of the book, focuses on European and American 20th-century art, examining its trends, its political implications, its relationship with science, literature, theatre, cinema, and its historical and social contexts more widely. The second offers a concise overview of contemporary architecture and, simultaneously, an analysis of its cultural roots. Finally, the third entry reflects on the overall meaning, history and role of critique, analyzing its more political and militant connotations and establishing it as a necessary interpretative tool for the production and affirmation of art.
