Il libro ricostruisce il legame fra due tra i maggiori esponenti della cultura italiana del Novecento: Giuseppe Tucci (1894-1984) e Giovanni Gentile (1875-1944), attraverso le 63 lettere del primo e le 4 del filosofo scampate alla dispersione. Italia e India, Tibet e Giappone: questo lo sfondo che porta all’ideazione dell’IsMEO, l’Istituto del medio ed Estremo Oriente. Le ultime lettere acquistano interesse ulteriore per come i due corrispondenti guardano e vivono – in concordia discors – la fine di un regime in cui hanno creduto e sono stati protagonisti.
Alice Crisanti si occupa di storia degli studi orientalistici in Italia tra Otto e Novecento. È autrice di saggi su Tucci, tra cui Giuseppe Tucci. Una biografia (Unicopli, 2020), tradotto in inglese e francese (Motilal Banarsidass 2023; Inalco 2025) e vincitore del Premio Ettore Gallo 2022.

The book traces the connection between two of the leading figures of 20th-century Italian culture: Giuseppe Tucci (1894–1984) and Giovanni Gentile (1875–1944), through the 63 letters written by the tibetologist and the 4 letters by the philosopher. Italy and India, Tibet and Japan: this is the backdrop that led to the founding of IsMEO, the Institute of the Middle and Far East. The final letters take on added interest in how the two correspondents view and experience the end of a regime in which they believed and in which they played a leading role.
Alice Crisanti specializes in the history of Oriental studies in Italy during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She is the author of essays on Tucci, including Giuseppe Tucci: A Biography (Unicopli, 2020), which has been translated into English and French (Motilal Banarsidass, 2023; Inalco, 2025) and won the 2022 Ettore Gallo Prize.

The complete works of the philosopher Giovanni Gentile deserve special mention. In recent years, the publisher has focused on current issues in international politics, diplomacy, and political science as applied to cultural management.
