Sherlock Holmes is a character who is more alive than ever, continually revisited by film and literature: he is the greatest detective of all time and has been solving new cases for 130 years. It was high time, therefore, that he was investigated: Investigation of Sherlock Holmes is a journey into the world created by Conan Doyle; it is a biography of its author, a man who would have liked to achieve fame and glory through historical novels, but instead ended up unwittingly perhaps by reinventing and making the detective novel a work of art. It is a guide to the places, themes, atmospheres and characters of the world in which Holmes lives, starting with his friend and collaborator Watson. Watson and Sherlock Holmes were the two sides of the personality of the author, psychologically and even physically. Watson was what Doyle was, and what he probably wanted to get rid of, to become Holmes. Moreover, there would be no protagonist without an antagonist: the book explores the mystery of evil with which Holmes has to confront, represented above all by his irreducible enemy, Professor Moriarty, the king of crime. The book sets out to unravel the mysteries of the most important detective in the history of fiction. We will then discover that the detective story is not simply a niche genre, an exciting entertainment, but a true metaphor of the human condition, which is made to tirelessly search for the truth.
