Salvatore, invece, approda negli Stati Uniti, al prestigioso Neuroscience Institute of Consciousness and Sleep.

Don’t Sleep and Dream

Why do we sleep? How does our conscious self come into being? And what are dreams made of? Fascinated by these questions, Salvatore and Peppe spend their high school and college years together, but then their paths diverge: Peppe stays in Naples with his family, spends his days on social media, and can’t find a job. Salvatore, on the other hand, heads to the United States, to the prestigious Neuroscience Institute of Consciousness and Sleep (NICS). The NICS is filled with young people from all over the world studying the human mind, and it’s in the running for the Nobel Prize thanks to its discoveries regarding sleep — including the still-secret “Neurosleeper”: an electrode that allows the two hemispheres of the brain to be put to sleep in turn, eliminating the need for sleep altogether. Rosalyn, the brilliant Irishwoman, has had it implanted, and now alternates twelve hours a day of absolute efficiency with another twelve in which she can express the most creative and instinctual part of herself. And the next one could very well be Salvatore…

With the precision of a scholar and the unbridled imagination of a young writer, Giuseppe de Alteriis brings to life a surprising novel that guides us through profound questions, explores scientific research and the dire consequences of “publish or perish,” reflects on the role of women in academia, and at the same time takes us on a dazzling adventure between Naples and the United States — embodying in its protagonists the hopes, fears, and dreams of Gen Z — a generation raised in the digital world yet deeply eager to remain human. A refreshingly fresh novel, written in the frantic style of someone who has run out of time, it is both a love song to science and a passionate exploration of the stuff that dreams are made of.
