Latte guasto
by Santini, Valentina
May 19, 1969. Viola is eleven years old when, all of a sudden, she stops speaking. No one – neither her family nor the people of Quattrostrade, the small village where she lives – can understand why. What happened to the girl? Before long, the explanation takes hold: Viola has gone mad, as the saying goes. For Viola, that verdict becomes both a trap and a strange kind of refuge. She doesn’t resist it. Yet in truth, she is guarding a secret – one so dangerous that if she were to speak, the consequences would be devastating. As the years pass, words themselves begin to change meaning. They turn into unreliable masks, much like the people who utter them. Viola grows up learning to experience relationships and the world through her body instead: through sight, through listening. Deprived of speech, she inhabits a private realm of her own, where she learns to sense truth in silence. She tastes, touches, listens, and allows herself to be overwhelmed – in the desperate hope that someone, despite everything, might still recognize her voice.
